Quality Teaching
Quality teaching is not so much about what it taught, but rather how the teaching is done (Moss 2009). Whether you are teaching students for an hour, a day, a week, or a whole term, you can practice and provide students with quality teaching. In fact, with research showing a link between quality teaching and improved student outcomes (NSW DET 2003), teachers have a responsibility to practice quality teaching.
To support teachers in providing a high quality of teaching to their students, the NSW DET developed the NSW Quality Teaching Model. The Model itself seeks to guide and support teachers in providing quality teaching by making explicit what quality teaching is and what it looks like in the classroom. It has been designed to be used from Early Stage One through to Stage Six across all six Key Learning Areas of the NSW curriculum (NSW DEC 2003).
The Quality Teaching Model itself consists of three interrelated pedagogical dimensions, detailed below, that have been linked to improved student outcomes (NSW DET 2003);
- Intellectual Quality
- Quality Learning Environment
- Significance
Click on each of the above elements to find out more information, and how to implement them in to your pedagogy and classroom.
